Dr. Morris’s Bio

This is my 11th year teaching at Scholars Academy. I direct the 5th-8th grade band program, teach 3rd and 4th grade recorder classes and 1st-4th grade general music.

My fascination with music began when I started listening to 45s on a small record player and when I watched The Beatles perform on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. In 6th grade, I joined the band at my elementary school playing the cornet. I soon switched to the euphonium, practicing diligently until I made the Tennessee All-State Band my senior year in high school.

I earned my Bachelor's degree in Music Education at the University of Tennessee, went to Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, for my Master's in Conducting and completed the Ph.D. in music education at Florida State. In between I taught at the high school, middle school and college levels in Tennessee, North & South Carolina, Florida and Kentucky before settling in Charlotte, where I taught in CMS for 10 years.

In addition to teaching, I was conductor of the Charlotte Concert Band for 13 years, was active as a professional tuba player for 30 years, and I now conduct the Matthews Concert Band.

My goal is to pass on the joy of making music to my Scholars Academy students.
